As name suggest, it comes on the full moon day in the month of Vaishakha to commemorate birth & death of Gautam Buddha. The buddhist after ceremonial prayers to the idol of Buddha. They also denote clothes & food to poor. At night the 'Buddha Vihar' (Buddhist Temple) and its adjoining areas are illuminated with candles and oil lamps. The entire month of "vaishakha" is considered to be auspiciouis, hence special prayers are held on all its days. On Buddha Pournima every sect of Buddhism in India observes some distinctive rituals. In Sikkim, the lamas are engaged in recitation of the scriptures from early morning. The Mahayana Buddhist organise a colourful procession of monks. The Ambedkar Buddhist also organise a pageant, but they include a photograph of Ambedkar with that of a Buddha. The Thervada Buddhist offer ceremonial prayers to the idol of Buddha. Losar Losar is a new year day for Buddhist which falls on 25th day of 10th month of libation calender. ed., in December as per English Calendar. On this occassion male & Female goat are purified for sacrifice. Also on this day horse races are arranged and the winner is felicitated by the ladies present with local beer. The finale of the celebration is an assembly of the all the people in village in open field, where they sing & dance together. This festival is celebrated to mark the birth of 'Padmalam bhava' (founder of Lamaism). This festival is a 3 day event, On first day villagers dress in their finery and rush to 'Gompa' (bhoodhist monastery) to grab the best teats. A shrill burgle declares the commencement of the play. A group of pre-lamaism priest enter to the wailing note struck by gongs and shawms The whole day marks the local plays ached by local persons. On next day the ceremony of stabbing the enemy with the mythic dagger called 'phurbu' takes place. |
